How to Improve Spiritual Health

When we talk about life coaching, many people think of it as a way to boost their careers, better manage their emotions, or find more satisfaction in their relationships. While these are all essential components of life coaching (and general wellbeing), spiritual health is another crucial piece of the puzzle.

But what is spiritual health? It feels incomplete to talk about improving our lives and increasing our emotional health and wellness without addressing faith. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As a member of the Church, it helps guide my coaching and my personal values.

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we believe that God is not only the creator of all things but that He is also our kind and loving Father in Heaven. He knows each of us personally and cares deeply about our wellbeing and even the minute details of our lives.

Working on our spiritual health is all about strengthening our faith in God and our relationship with our beliefs. If you want to fortify your spiritual health, I can help you through life coaching. Reach out today to learn more, and let me join you on your journey.

Spiritual Health and Life Coaching

Many of my clients ask how faith meets life coaching—how can we apply principles that we might learn at church or in our spiritual practices and incorporate them into our life coach experience? How can life coaching improve spiritual wellness?

I like to break down my personal beliefs to explain how, as a follower of the Restored Church of Jesus Christ, I incorporate my faith into all corners of my life. Here are four crucial spiritual health fundamentals from the Church that I feel really align with the concept of life coaching.

  1. We All Have Agency

Members of my church believe that our Heavenly Father has a plan for all of humankind—as a whole and for each individual person. He allows us our agency to make our own decisions and choices. Even though God gave us commandments to guide us, it’s up to us to decide which ones, if any, we will obey and exactly how we will keep them. It’s even our choice to believe in Him at all.

Although He has given us a framework for growth and progression (the Gospel), many details and choices are left up to us to decide. We get to choose how we will show up in our lives. What will we pursue? How will we treat others? What will we do with our money? Where will we live? The list goes on and on.

Our sense of agency is one of the greatest gifts that God has given us. We’re in control of our lives. We get to choose good or evil. We get to decide on our entire life experience.

As a life coach, I teach my clients that they get to choose their thoughts, feelings, and results of their lives—how great does that feel?! It’s something we aren’t taught in school, and some of us may never have learned that we’re able to choose our life path. Even for those who learned this concept of spiritual wellness in religious teachings, it can still be a helpful reminder.

Every man may act according to the moral agency which I have given unto him, D&C 101:78.

  1. With Agency Comes Accountability

Alongside the gift of agency comes accountability for our choices. We are held accountable for the decisions we make. Accountability shows up in religion frequently—often tied with sin and repentance. But the thing about accountability is it also shows up all around in the secular world.

Look at these examples:

Money

When we spend irresponsibly, we end up with debt.

Food

When we don’t watch what we eat, we can become an unhealthy weight.

Laws

When we break the law, we might go to jail or get fined.

Accountability is around us all the time. We are responsible for our actions, and we must face the consequences for the choices we make, positive or not-so-positive. Recognizing the results of our choices is part of improving our spiritual health. We’ll start to make healthy decisions so we can enjoy positive outcomes.

  1. Faith Versus Fear

In Isaiah 41:10, we’re told, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will … uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Throughout the scriptures—the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and many other religious texts—we’re encouraged and counseled to choose faith over fear. Now, like me, you probably know that sometimes this is easier said than done in real life.

Life coaching can help by teaching you how to purposefully, deliberately choose your thoughts. You’ll learn to process negative emotions like fear in a healthier way. You’ll learn to understand that fear serves a purpose, but we’re not meant to live in a state of fear and worry all the time. When we move forward in faith, we will see fear decrease and our spiritual health get stronger.

  1. Understanding Guilt and Shame

In life coaching, we also explore and discuss the concepts of guilt versus shame. Guilt means, “I have done something wrong.” The feelings of guilt evoke a desire to change. Guilt comes from God and helps us recognize when we need to make a change or do something different. It’s our way of knowing it’s time to repent. It’s a healthy negative emotion—a clean pain.

On the other hand, shame means, “I’m bad because of what I’ve done.” Shame makes us feel a desire to hide. It actually discourages growth and change. When we feel shame, we often engage in harmful behaviors like overeating, overdrinking, and drugs to numb our feelings. In turn, these choices create more shame, and it becomes a spiral that can damage our spiritual health.

Life coaching helps bring you out of shame and overcome the root of the problem. You’ll learn how to let go, learn, and move forward. In each mistake or misstep, there’s something to be learned; when we extract that life lesson, we’re ready to keep pressing on.

Life Coaching to Move Towards a More Connected Life

The idea of life coaching aligns with improving our spiritual health. Our faith is key to our feelings of confidence, wellness, and peace. When we feel connected to our Creator, we will enjoy a stronger sense of purpose, a better relationship with our spouse and children, and a greater sense of meaning each day.

Life coaching helps us (me and you) strip away the cultural teachings, messages from the media, incorrect lessons from childhood, or traumatic life events and lean into our authentic selves. It can help us uncover the true self that God hoped we would become.

For me, life coaching has helped me better understand my religion and the Gospel teachings of Jesus Christ. Because I’ve learned how to recognize incorrect beliefs and thought patterns in my mind, I can now truly live in harmony with my most important priorities and values. Do I do it perfectly all the time? Heck no! But am I less judgmental towards others and myself? Am I more at peace and more fulfilled in my life? Heck yes!
